Isle of Skye, Scotland 11-17 December 2017 - £1849 pp - FULLY BOOKED!

Jurassic Dawn, Quiraing, Isle of Skye
Light and Land
Skye is the largest and most northerly major island of the Inner Hebrides, situated off the Northwest coast of the Scottish mainland. The coastline of Skye is a series of peninsulas and bays which radiate from a centre dominated by the Cuillin mountain range. To the north, the Trotternish peninsula is characterised by a spectacular ridge of hills that runs for over 30km along its backbone. At the southern end of the ridge lies Storr, where the pinnacle of the Old man of Storr rises above a remarkable landslip. Further north, the Quiraing is another area of landslip characterised by peaks and gullies. The scenery here is otherworldly and amongst the most breathtaking anywhere on earth – no wonder movie makers have used it in blockbusters such as Prometheus!

During this 6 night, 7 day workshop we will have the opportunity to explore Skye from our base in Portree. From there we will have a short drive to the Trotternish peninsula to capture the Old man of Storr and the Quiraing in morning winter light, as well as heading south to the beautiful coastline at Elgol, a fantastic sunset location. Here the beach is littered with boulders and rock formations, with a backdrop of the Cuillin mountains. The mountains may be snow capped making them even more photogenic at this time of year, and the low sunlight should make for all day shooting. Skye is famed for its changeable and often dramatic weather, so expect to see rainbows, sunlight, and stormy skies! The drive to Elgol is also dotted with various photogenic opportunities, including small lochs and a dramatic ruined church and cemetery.

We will also travel to a number of other locations including Neist point, with its iconic lighthouse situated on the most westerly point on Skye, Sligachan and Glen Brittle with wonderful views of the Cuillins, and the beautiful Talisker bay, but will aim to keep our itinerary flexible taking account of weather and access.

If there are clear skies there is also the possibility of astrophotography (our selected dates coincide with the peak of the Geminids meteor shower, and a moonless sky) and even the outside chance of seeing the northern lights! Both Antony and Mark have extensive experience of shooting in cold climates and at night, and will be on hand to give advice on technique and composition.

It is not expected that the walks involved will be particularly strenuous, except for the walk up to the old man of Storr, where a reasonable level of fitness and mobility will be required. Good footwear (walking boots with Yaktrax / microspikes if snow or ice present) will be needed for some parts of the trip. Waterproof and warm jacket and trousers will also be needed to cope with the winter conditions, together with fleeces, gloves and a hat. As always, layering of clothes is advised.

This tour will be led by Antony Spencer and Mark McColl and has been organised through the renowned photography tour company Light and Land Ltd. The workshop can be booked via the Light and Land Website at
